Heralded as a ‘new town reaching out to the 21st Century’, Thamesmead was built at the end of the 1960s on the south bank of the Thames, on the eastern periphery of London. Thamesmead was designed around modernist ideals. Architect Robert Rigg took inspiration from housing complexes in Sweden, where lakes and canals had been used with the aim of reducing vandalism and other crime. Water was to be a calming influence on the residents.
However, issues soon began to arise through a combination of incorrect assumptions, spiralling costs and a lack of facilities. Most notably, the failure of promised new transport links to arrive, left the town cut-off and isolated.
